Verify your instructor’s status with PADI Pro-Chek

Every time I teach a class, or even sign an email from Dive With Frank HQ, my PADI Instructor number is usually somewhere nearby.

Most students never think twice about it, but that number is actually useful. It lets you verify that an instructor is current and authorized to teach through PADI’s Pro Chek system.

That matters. You are trusting someone with scuba training, life-support equipment, emergency procedures, and your comfort in the water. Most instructors are honest professionals, but it is still completely reasonable to verify that the person teaching your course is current.

How to check an instructor’s PADI status

1. Go to PADI Pro Chek.
2. Enter the instructor’s PADI Member Number.
3. Complete the captcha.
4. Review the instructor’s current professional status.

What a valid instructor record looks like

When you look up an instructor, you should see their name, PADI professional rating, renewal status, and whether they are currently authorized to teach.

The big things to look for are:

• Authorized to Teach: This should show that the instructor is currently authorized.
• Renewed: This shows whether the instructor has renewed their PADI membership for the current year.
• Expiration Date: This tells you when the current authorization expires.

A quick note about specialty ratings

Pro Chek is useful, but it may not show every single specialty or distinctive specialty authorization an instructor holds. Some credentials may require additional confirmation through the instructor, the dive shop, or PADI directly.

So don’t panic if every specialty is not listed publicly. The most important starting point is whether the instructor is current, renewed, and authorized to teach.

What if you only have the instructor’s name?

If you do not have the instructor’s PADI Member Number, ask them for it. A current instructor should have no problem giving it to you.

If you still cannot get the number, you can contact PADI and ask whether they can help verify the instructor manually.

Why this matters

This is not about being suspicious or difficult. It is about being informed.

Scuba students deserve to know that their instructor is current, qualified, and authorized to teach the course they are taking. Pro Chek gives you a quick way to confirm that before you get in the water.

Most of the time, the answer will be exactly what you expect: everything is current, everyone is legit, and you can get back to the fun part.
