Supernatural VR: The Lowest-Friction Workout I’ve Ever Stuck With

I’ve been using Supernatural on Meta Quest since January 2023. I keep meaning to write this every year… and somehow keep forgetting. Two years in, it’s finally time.I originally found Supernatural during the COVID era, when working out at home wasn’t just convenient, it was necessary. What I didn’t expect was that it would quietly become one of the most consistent fitness habits I’ve ever maintained.

Let’s be clear: this app has been a game changer for me.

I get a legitimately hard workout. According to my Apple Watch and heart-rate tracking, I can work out for an hour and burn as many or more calories than running. But the real magic isn’t the calorie burn. It’s the activation energy.

I roll out of bed. Throw on clothes. Walk downstairs. A few minutes later, I’m moving. No commute. No gym friction. No excuses.

And that’s why I’ve stuck with it.

Side note before anyone asks: there are probably a million Supernatural gameplay videos on YouTube already. You won’t be getting one of me flailing around in a headset. You’re welcome.

The Coaches (aka: The Voices in My Head)

Supernatural lives and dies by its coaches. You hear them constantly, and thankfully, the core lineup is genuinely solid. I like some more than others, and that’s fine because Supernatural includes a Focus Mode that lets you mute coach banter and just move to the music.

Here’s the core cast:

CoachVibeMy Take
Coach LeanneDe facto leaderFeels like she gets first dibs on playlists. Polished. Confident. Not my personal jam, but clearly beloved.
Coach RaneirJoyful chaosOne word: fabulous. Infectious energy. Also… absurdly ripped.
Coach DocZen nerdSupernatural’s meditation guru. Thoughtful, grounding, and a self-admitted Star Wars nerd.
Coach MarkCoach’s coachIn another timeline, he’s the most popular high school football coach in suburban Dallas.
Coach MindyTiny powerhouseSmall frame, huge energy. Brings serious intensity. Would not surprise me if she could absolutely wreck someone in a boxing gym.
Coach DwanaRock-and-roll goddessTriple threat: Supernatural coach, rock-and-roll energy, and badass mom. Zero notes.

They also rotate in guest coaches from time to time, but those six are the backbone.

The Workouts (There Are Only Four)

Supernatural keeps things simple. There are exactly four workout types:

Flow

This is the signature workout. Think rhythmic target striking with bats, full-body movement, squats, lunges, twists, and overhead reaches. It’s not boxing-inspired. It’s more like a highly stylized, music-driven movement flow that sneaks up on you and leaves you drenched.

Boxing

This is where you throw punches. Jabs, hooks, uppercuts, dodges, and footwork. Faster, punchier, and more cardio-forward than Flow. I alternate Flow and Boxing on my workout days and usually go an hour or a bit more.

Stretch

Exactly what it sounds like. Guided mobility and recovery sessions. I don’t do these nearly as often as I should, and Supernatural would like me to publicly acknowledge that.

Meditation

Guided breathwork and mindfulness. Mostly led by Coach Doc. Same story as stretching: useful, well done, and underused by me.

All workouts come in Low, Medium, and High intensity levels.

What Meta Changed (and Didn’t)

Meta acquired Supernatural and promptly cut the subscription price in half.

I was paying $19.99/month. Now it’s $9.99/month.

Honestly? I would still pay the old price. The new pricing feels like a move to drive Meta Quest adoption, especially with the Quest 3. That’s speculation on my part, but either way, it’s an absurd value.

Not all changes post-acquisition thrilled me, but nothing broke the core experience.

Group Mode (Yes, It Exists)

Supernatural added a “group” mode last year. I use quotes because it caps at three people, but I’ve worked out with a friend on the other side of the country, which is genuinely cool.

I’m an introvert. I don’t work out for social reasons. I want to get in, get it done, and get on with my day. But if you want community, it’s there.

There’s also an active Facebook group and a Reddit community. You can usually find free 30-day trial codes in either. I get five per month, so honestly, emailing me might snag you one too.

My Setup (Minimum Space, Maximum Sweat)

I can comfortably work out in an 8×8 square in my living room. Over two years, I’ve slowly cobbled together a setup:

  • Meta Quest 3 (formerly Oculus, fight me)
  • Silicone controller covers (because I sweat like a maniac)
  • Rubber mat (from the Supernatural shop before it shut down)
  • Polyester beanie (absorbs sweat and prevents lens fog)
  • Wrist sweatbands
  • Fan blowing directly at me
  • Water bottle
  • Apple Watch for heart-rate tracking

I didn’t buy all this at once. It accumulated over time.

Scuba Fitness Tie-In (Because This Is Dive With Frank)

Scuba diving rewards general fitness more than people like to admit.

Better cardio means lower air consumption. Better leg strength means easier entries and exits. Better balance and control translate directly to buoyancy and trim.

Supernatural helps me stay dive-ready year-round, especially during stretches when I’m not in the water as much as I’d like.

The Long Game

I’m probably about six months away from hitting one million Supernatural points. I suspect it’ll be mildly anticlimactic.

That’s fine. That’s not the point.

The point is consistency. Low friction. Movement that doesn’t feel like punishment.

If you’re looking for a way to stay in shape that doesn’t require heroic motivation, Supernatural might be worth a look.

One comment

  1. I just started using Supernatural a couple of months ago. My friend gifted me her Meta Quest 2 headset when she upgraded. I love it. Having ADHD makes it hard to stick with any kind of program. With Supernatural, I get the dopamine hit that I need to keep me coming back – it works out my body and keeps my brain engaged.
