If you are in Columbia, Ellicott City, Elkridge, Clarksville, Fulton, or nearby, you are in my home zone. I live in Ellicott City and I teach students from Howard County year-round.
I love this stuff. The goal is not to rush you through a checklist. The goal is calm, confident competence that makes you want to dive again next month, not next year.
How certification works
- Knowledge: Learn the concepts and standards so the skills make sense.
- Pool sessions: Build comfort, control, and problem-solving in controlled water.
- Open water checkout dives: Demonstrate the skills in open water and earn your certification.
In many cases, you can select pool dates and times that work for your schedule. Some classes have firm dates. Either way, you can browse options before you commit.

Pool and training locations
Students from Howard County typically complete pool sessions in Pikesville or Laurel, depending on the season and the specific class. Specific pool details are determined based on the class and your scheduling needs once you enroll.
If you have access to a suitable private pool and prefer to train there, we can discuss scheduling and determine what makes sense.

For initial open water certification training, students provide the following minimum personal gear:
