Advanced Open Water

Exploration, Excitement, Experiences

That’s what the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is all about.

You don’t need to be “advanced” to take this course. It’s designed to advance your diving, and you can start immediately after earning your PADI Open Water certification.

This is the course where divers stop just following and start thinking. You gain experience, sharpen awareness, and build confidence through real dives in real conditions. You’ll try new types of diving, log meaningful dives, and learn how to plan and execute dives with intention.

This is where diving starts to feel deliberate instead of accidental.

Each Adventure Dive may count as credit toward the first dive of the corresponding PADI Specialty Diver Course. If you’ve already completed a specialty, ask Frank if you’ve earned Adventure Dive credit.

Who should take this course?

If you’re a PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver who is at least 12 years old and you’re ready to grow as a diver, this course is for you.

Junior divers may participate in certain Adventure Dives with age-appropriate limits. If you have questions about what applies to you or your diver, check with Frank. He’s the one teaching the class.

If you’re already an Adventure Diver, you only need two additional Adventure Dives to earn the Advanced Open Water Diver certification.

What will you learn?

You’ll work directly with Frank to plan your learning path by choosing from a wide range of Adventure Dives.

All students complete two required dives:

  • Deep Adventure Dive – Learn how to plan and execute deeper dives while managing gas, task loading, and narcosis awareness.
  • Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive – Build real compass skills, natural navigation, kick cycles, and situational awareness.

You’ll then choose three additional Adventure Dives based on interest, conditions, and location. Options often include Peak Performance Buoyancy, Night Diving, Wreck Diving, Underwater Photography, Search and Recovery, Fish Identification, and more.

This course is about building judgment underwater, not just collecting dives.

How can you start learning now?

The academic portion of the course is typically completed using PADI eLearning. Most students prefer this option, and it works well with busy schedules.

Instructor-led classroom sessions are also available if you want them.

Once you book, Frank will coordinate scheduling, locations, Adventure Dive selection, and make sure you have everything you need before training begins.

What scuba gear will you use?

You’ll use standard scuba equipment plus additional gear depending on your chosen Adventure Dives.

This may include a compass, dive knife or tool, dive light, lift bag, or specialty configurations such as dry suits or sidemount.

Frank will review gear requirements in advance so you know exactly what to bring or rent.

How Long Will It Take?

The course includes knowledge development and five Open Water Adventure Dives.

Training is typically completed over at least two days, depending on conditions, location, and scheduling. This is not rushed. The goal is learning, not checking boxes.
