The dive is the adventure. The surprises don’t have to be.
Nobody books a dive trip expecting a missed connection, lost luggage, unexpected illness, or a diving accident. But sometimes things go sideways, and a little preparation beforehand can make a big difference.
At Dive With Frank, I spend a lot of time helping divers prepare for what happens underwater. I think that same attention should go into preparing for everything that happens getting there, getting home, and in between. Whether you’re planning a weekend wreck dive or an international adventure, understanding dive travel insurance and dive accident coverage is an important part of preparing for the trip.
What Kind of Coverage Do You Need?
Dive Accident Insurance
Designed to help with eligible expenses from covered diving accidents. Depending on the policy, benefits may include emergency medical treatment, recompression therapy, and medical evacuation.
Travel Insurance
Designed to help protect your trip investment when covered circumstances disrupt your plans. Benefits may include trip cancellation, interruption, delays, lost baggage, and other travel-related emergencies.
Combined Dive & Travel Coverage
Some plans bring both types of protection together. Certain policies also include dive-specific benefits, such as missed diving days, delayed equipment, or liveaboard-related disruptions.
One important distinction: Travel insurance doesn’t automatically include dive accident coverage, and dive accident insurance doesn’t necessarily cover trip cancellation or lost luggage.

Divers Alert Network (DAN)
DAN has a long history of supporting diver safety through research, education, medical resources, emergency assistance, and insurance programs.
DAN membership provides access to valuable benefits and the ability to purchase dive accident insurance. DAN also offers separate trip protection plans.
Important: DAN membership alone does not cover the medical costs of a dive accident. Dive accident insurance must be purchased separately.

DiveAssure
DiveAssure offers insurance programs developed specifically around diving and dive travel, with options for individual trips and annual coverage.
Depending on the plan, benefits may include diving accident coverage, trip cancellation and interruption, diving equipment protection, and certain missed diving days or liveaboard-related disruptions.
Available coverage and benefits depend on the selected plan, your place of residence, and the policy terms.
Before You Buy
Every policy is different. Before choosing coverage, make sure you understand the limits, exclusions, eligibility requirements, and activities covered.
Pay particular attention to your planned diving activities, cancellation coverage, medical benefits, and any requirements for purchasing coverage shortly after booking your trip. Don’t assume your regular health insurance or credit card travel benefits cover everything.

A Final Thought
Insurance isn’t the exciting part of a dive trip. Neither is checking your passport, testing your equipment, or reviewing your emergency plan. But preparation is part of being a responsible diver.
Plan well. Dive safely. Enjoy the adventure.
