There are good reasons to go deeper.
Maybe there is a wreck sitting below 100 feet. Maybe the interesting part of a wall is farther down. Maybe you are getting into offshore diving where 60 feet barely gets you started. Whatever the reason, deeper diving changes the dive in ways that go well beyond the number on your computer.
The PADI Deep Diver Specialty is about learning to plan and manage those changes. You will work on gas management, narcosis awareness, buoyancy, depth and time limits, buddy procedures, and the judgment required when the surface is a long way above you.
Going deeper is easy. Going deeper with a plan is the skill.
Who Should Take This Course?
Deep Diver is for experienced recreational divers who want to explore sites beyond normal Advanced Open Water depths and understand how to do it deliberately instead of simply following somebody deeper.
For DWF Deep Diver training, you should be at least 15 years old and hold a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification or an appropriate qualifying certification from another recognized training organization.
You should also already be reasonably comfortable with buoyancy, ascents, gas checks, and basic dive planning. We will absolutely work on those skills during the course, but depth adds task loading quickly. This is not the best place to discover that you have never really figured out neutral buoyancy.
If you are not sure whether you are ready, ask. I would much rather help you build the missing skill first than pretend another certification card will make it disappear.
Deep Changes the Dive
At 100 feet, you are not just doing the same dive you did at 40 feet with a bigger number on the screen.
You breathe through your gas faster. Your no-decompression time gets shorter. Nitrogen narcosis may affect how you think and react. Small delays consume more of the dive plan. Changes in buoyancy become more significant, and if something goes wrong, the surface is farther away.
None of that makes deep recreational diving inherently reckless. It means the margins deserve respect.
One of the most important lessons in this course is learning to recognize how those pieces interact. A dive that looks perfectly reasonable when you consider depth alone may look very different once you add gas supply, bottom time, conditions, temperature, your buddy, and the trip back to the surface.
What Will You Learn?
The PADI Deep Diver Specialty includes four open-water training dives. The dives progressively build your ability to plan and conduct deeper recreational dives while staying within appropriate limits.
During the course, we will work on things such as:
- Planning dives beyond typical Advanced Open Water depths.
- Understanding the additional risks and considerations that come with depth.
- Managing gas supply and establishing sensible turn points.
- Monitoring no-decompression limits and maintaining awareness of your dive computer.
- Recognizing the effects of nitrogen narcosis and responding appropriately.
- Maintaining buddy contact and communication at depth.
- Controlling buoyancy during deeper portions of the dive.
- Making controlled ascents and safety stops.
- Using equipment and procedures appropriate for deeper recreational diving.
- Recognizing when conditions, gas, time, or another factor means the correct decision is to end the dive.
The goal is not to make 130 feet feel ordinary. It is to give you enough knowledge and experience to understand what changes as you go deeper and make better decisions because of it.
Gas Gets Expensive Down There
This is one of the lessons that becomes very real, very quickly.
As depth increases, the surrounding pressure increases, and every breath consumes more gas from your cylinder. At roughly 100 feet of seawater, you are breathing gas at about four times the surface pressure. Your pressure gauge can start moving considerably faster than you may be used to seeing on a shallow dive.
That means “I will head up when I get low” is not a gas-management plan.
We will talk about how much gas you have, how quickly you are using it, how much you need to complete the dive and ascent, and why you need enough reserve to deal with something unexpected without turning a manageable problem into an emergency.
You do not need to become a human spreadsheet underwater. You do need to stop treating the number on your pressure gauge like something you check only when somebody reminds you.
Narcosis Is Not Just a Vocabulary Word
Nitrogen narcosis can affect divers at depth in different ways. Some people feel relaxed or euphoric. Others may experience slowed thinking, poor judgment, fixation, anxiety, or difficulty performing tasks that would normally be simple.
The tricky part is that the brain you are using to decide whether your thinking is impaired is the same brain that may be impaired.
During Deep Diver training, we discuss what narcosis can look like, how depth can affect performance, and why recognizing a change in yourself or your buddy matters. If narcosis becomes a problem, the solution is wonderfully uncomplicated: ascend to a shallower depth.
There is no prize for proving you can tough it out.
130 Feet Is a Limit, Not a Destination
The PADI Deep Diver certification expands your recreational training range to a maximum depth of 40 metres/130 feet.
That does not mean every Deep Diver course needs to become a race to touch 130 feet, and it definitely does not mean every dive afterward should be planned to the edge of that limit.
Depth is one part of the dive plan. Conditions, visibility, water temperature, gas supply, decompression limits, your experience, your buddy, the site, and the reason for going there all matter too.
I am much more interested in teaching you how to decide whether a deeper dive makes sense than teaching you to chase a number on a depth gauge.
How Does the Course Work?
Knowledge development is completed through current PADI course materials before and alongside the in-water training. We will review the dive plans, depth considerations, gas management, narcosis, equipment, emergency planning, and what we are trying to accomplish before each dive.
The specialty requires four open-water deep dives and is completed over at least two days.
If you previously completed the qualifying Deep Adventure Dive during Advanced Open Water, that dive may be eligible for credit toward the specialty. We will verify your training and determine what applies before scheduling the remaining dives.
The actual depths are progressive and depend on the training objectives, site, conditions, diver readiness, and applicable PADI standards. We do not go deeper simply because there happens to be more water underneath us.
What Gear Will You Need?
You will need normal scuba equipment appropriate for the site and conditions, including a dive computer you understand how to use.
Depending on the training location and dive plan, additional equipment may include:
- Dive light
- Slate or wet notes
- Surface marker buoy and reel
- Appropriate exposure protection
- Additional equipment appropriate to the site and gas plan
Deep diving is a particularly bad time to discover that you do not know what your computer is telling you. Before the course, make sure you understand how to read depth, no-decompression time, ascent information, and safety-stop information on the computer you actually plan to dive.
If you need help with that, bring the manual. I have no objection whatsoever to reading instructions before trusting a tiny wrist computer with the math keeping us out of decompression.
Where Do We Do the Dives?
Deep Diver is offered by request because we need an open-water site that gives us the depth and conditions necessary to conduct meaningful training.
That may mean an appropriate Mid-Atlantic quarry or another dive site where the course objectives can be completed safely. It can also make sense alongside certain deeper DWF diving opportunities when the location, schedule, and training plan line up.
I am not going to manufacture a Deep Diver course in a site that barely gives us enough depth to make the numbers work. The environment needs to support the training.
Deep Diver and Advanced Open Water Are Not the Same Thing
The Deep Adventure Dive in Advanced Open Water is an introduction to deeper diving. The Deep Diver Specialty takes that introduction and builds on it across four dedicated training dives.
That extra time matters. Instead of touching deeper water once and moving on to the next Adventure Dive, we get to work repeatedly with planning, gas management, narcosis awareness, buoyancy, ascents, and the decisions that become increasingly important as depth increases.
