Fire department dive teams. Rescue divers. Law enforcement dive units. Public safety agencies. Anyone who has spent enough time around team-based water rescue knows the feeling.
“Do we really have to do this again?”
Yeah. You do.
And there’s a very good reason for it.
I did IADRS-style annual testing for years, and I will be the first to say it was never my favorite day in the pool. It is hard work. It is tiring. It has a way of finding every shortcut you have been taking since the last time you did it.
But in the business, this is what we call a necessary evil.
What Is the IADRS Watermanship Test?
The IADRS Watermanship and SCUBA Skills Review is a fitness, comfort, and capability evaluation used by many public safety diving teams. Exact requirements can vary depending on the organization, agency, or team, but the purpose is usually the same:
Can this diver function safely and effectively in the water when conditions are less than friendly?
This is not about looking pretty. It is not about having the newest gear. It is not about who has the fanciest certification card in their wallet.
It is about the basics:
- Can you swim with equipment?
- Can you swim without equipment?
- Can you stay calm while tired?
- Can you tread water without falling apart?
- Can you retrieve objects underwater?
- Can you help move another tired or distressed diver?
That is the heart of watermanship.
What the Test Usually Includes
Depending on the team or agency, an IADRS-style watermanship evaluation may include some combination of these core parameters:

For the Non-Public Safety Divers: Why Should You Care?
If you are not a public safety diver, you may be wondering why any of this matters to you. Fair question.
Most recreational divers will never be asked to complete an IADRS test. You probably will not need to swim hundreds of yards in a timed evaluation, tread water with your hands out, or tow a tired diver across a pool as part of your normal dive life.
But the skills underwater matter to every diver.
Watermanship is the difference between someone who is merely certified and someone who is genuinely comfortable in the water. A certification card says you completed a class. Watermanship shows up when the water gets choppy, the current picks up, your buddy gets tired, or something does not go according to plan.
You do not need to be a public safety diver to benefit from being stronger, calmer, and more capable in the water.
I remember the first time I did anything even remotely like this. It was during my Divemaster training. We had to knock out swim tests and watermanship skills, and I distinctly remember thinking: “Thank God I only have to do this once.” Yeah… that didn’t age well.
Fast forward a bit, and I found myself doing IADRS-style testing as a Public Safety Diver. Turns out that “one-time thing” was actually just the beginning.
“But Scuba Divers Don’t Need to Swim Fast”
I have heard this one more times than I can count. “Well, scuba divers do not need to swim fast.” No. But public safety divers are not just scuba divers. And honestly, even recreational divers should be careful with that kind of thinking.
In any kind of water emergency, you want divers who can move from point A to point B quickly. You want people who are comfortable in the water, not just okay. You want people who can manage stress, fatigue, equipment, and changing conditions without melting down.
Gear helps. Training helps. Experience helps. But none of that replaces basic water comfort and swimming ability.
Why the IADRS Test Matters & What Happens When Teams Skip It
The IADRS test is not there because someone enjoys watching divers suffer in a pool. Probably. It exists because public safety diving often happens in ugly conditions. Cold water. Low visibility. Entanglement hazards. Stress. Time pressure. Uncertain information. Real consequences.
This kind of testing helps teams confirm that their divers are not just certified, but ready. It measures endurance, efficiency, composure, basic strength, and water confidence.
When teams skip annual watermanship testing, or treat it like a meaningless checkbox, problems can hide for a long time. Weak swimmers stay weak. Rusty divers stay rusty. Team leaders assume readiness that may not actually be there. Overconfidence replaces honest assessment. Small problems become bigger problems under stress.
That is not just a training issue. That is a team safety issue.
A public safety dive team depends on trust. If I am in the water with you, I need to know you can handle yourself. You need to know the same about me. Annual testing helps protect that trust.
How to Systematically Train for the IADRS Test
1. Preparing for the 800 Meter Fin Swim
The 800 meter swim with mask, snorkel, and fins is not just a leg workout. It is an efficiency test. If you blast out of the gate like you are being chased by a shark with a grudge, you are going to pay for it.
Target Practice Exercises:
- Steady 400s: Swim 400 meters with fins at a comfortable pace. Rest, then repeat.
- Build sets: Swim 4 x 200 meters, making each round slightly faster than the last.
- Kick efficiency drill: Swim 100 meters focusing only on smooth, quiet finning.
- Breathing rhythm drill: Use the snorkel and focus on relaxed, steady breathing.
The goal is not to thrash. The goal is to move smoothly and conserve energy.
2. Conditioning for the 500 Meter Swim Without Equipment
This is where poor swimmers tend to get exposed. Without fins, mask, or snorkel, you are left with your actual swimming ability. No toys. No shortcuts. Just you and the water.
Target Practice Exercises:
- 5 x 100 meters: Swim at a moderate pace with short rest between rounds.
- 10 x 50 meters: Swim slightly faster, focusing on clean technique.
- Distance build: Start with 200 meters continuous, then build to 300, 400, and 500.
- Stroke cleanup: Work on body position, breathing, and reducing wasted movement.
You do not need to look like an Olympic swimmer. You do need to be able to move through the water without looking like you are losing a fight with it.
3. Managing the 15-Minute Water Tread
The water tread is sneaky. At first, it does not seem that bad. Then the minutes start stacking up. Then the last two minutes show up, and suddenly your arms are out of the water and your legs are filing a formal complaint.
Target Practice Exercises:
- 5-minute base tread: Start with 5 minutes relaxed and controlled.
- Progressive build: Add 2 minutes each week until 15 minutes feels manageable.
- Hands-out intervals: Practice 30 seconds hands out, then 60, then 90, then 2 minutes.
- Eggbeater practice: Learn and refine the eggbeater kick. It is your friend.
Brute force will get you tired. Technique keeps you afloat.
4. Executing Underwater Object Retrieval & Tired Diver Tows
Object retrieval tests comfort, breath control, orientation, and problem solving. The tired diver tow is where the test starts feeling a little too real. Now you are not just moving yourself through the water. You are moving another person who may be tired, stressed, or injured.
Target Practice Exercises:
- Shallow retrievals & Descents: Start in shallow water and retrieve small objects calmly. Practice controlled duck dives and relaxed returns to the surface.
- Low-visibility simulation: Practice with eyes closed or blacked-out mask conditions only under proper supervision.
- Towed Diver Drills: Run 25-yard and 50-yard controlled tows while keeping the airway protected. Work up to a 100-yard full practice tow.
- Fatigue tow: Swim first, then tow. This better matches real-world stress.
How Often Should You Train?
If your only exposure to this test is once a year, it is going to feel like punishment. If you train for it, it becomes part of the job. A simple weekly conditioning plan might look like this:
- Day 1: Fin swim endurance and relaxed snorkel breathing
- Day 2: No-equipment swim intervals
- Day 3: Water tread practice and object retrieval
- Day 4: Tired diver tow practice and mixed conditioning
The real goal is readiness, not misery. Water has a way of finding the gaps in your training before you do. This test helps expose those gaps before they matter.
