Winter Is Coming. Your Dive Training Isn’t Going Anywhere. 🤿❄️

Every fall, divers across Maryland begin the exact same ritual: rinse the gear, pack it away in the basement, look mournfully at pictures of tropical reefs, and announce they will get serious about diving again in the spring.
Just because the local water is developing an attitude doesn’t mean your scuba education needs to go into hibernation.
Winter at Dive With Frank isn’t the end of the season; it is an opportunity to knock out certifications, stay sharp, and dial in skills before your next warm-water getaway. And depending on what you want to learn, you might not even need to get wet.
Keep Your Hair Dry: Classroom & Practical Certifications
Some of the most useful scuba classes don’t require a single underwater dive. If you want to use the off-season to build genuine self-reliance without braving chilly quarry waters, you have great options.
PADI Enriched Air (Nitrox) Diver: Planning a dive vacation or spending time on charter boats? Nitrox is one of the most practical specialty certifications you can earn. Learn how enriched air works, how oxygen exposure affects depth limits, how to analyze cylinders, and how to extend your no-decompression limits on appropriate dive profiles. You complete the academics, analyze tanks in person, and earn your certification without an open-water dive requirement.
PADI Equipment Specialist: Ever had a minor gear hiccup or a torn mouthpiece threaten to ruin an otherwise great dive day? This course breaks down how scuba systems work, routine maintenance, and how to manage field adjustments like swapping O-rings, inspecting hoses, and fitting fin straps. It builds practical confidence so you’re better prepared when small equipment issues crop up.
PADI AWARE Coral Reef Conservation: You do not have to be submerged to learn how to protect fragile marine habitats. Explore how coral reef ecosystems function, the real environmental challenges they face, and what everyday divers and ocean lovers can do to help preserve them. It is an engaging, zero-water class open to divers and nondivers alike.
Learn Skills That Might Save a Life: DAN Safety Training
Winter is the ideal time to complete hands-on emergency training. Dive With Frank offers practical, scenario-driven Divers Alert Network (DAN) first-aid and safety courses, including:
- Basic Life Support: CPR & First Aid
- Emergency Oxygen for Scuba Diving Injuries
- Diving First Aid (DFA)
You will practice real chest compressions, set up emergency oxygen delivery systems, and run practical response drills until the steps feel natural. You do not need to be a dive professional or even certified to participate. The person who needs your help someday might be your dive buddy. Or somebody you love.
Want to Get Wet? Head for the Heated Pool
If you want to spend time underwater without wearing 14 millimeters of neoprene, we have access to a heated indoor pool all winter long. That allows us to run:
- Discover Scuba Diving: Know someone who has always been curious about breathing underwater? An indoor pool session is the perfect low-pressure, comfortable way to experience scuba for the first time.
- Confined-Water Open Water Training: Complete your knowledge development and pool skills comfortably during the winter, then take your referral paperwork to finish checkout dives on a tropical vacation or when local diving conditions allow.
- Scuba Review / Tune-Ups: If your gear has been hanging in a closet for a while, spend an afternoon dialing in your buoyancy, trim, and fundamental drills in calm, warm water before boarding a charter boat.
For the Diehards: Cold Water & Dry Suits
Let’s be completely honest: dry suits aren’t magic. They don’t keep you warm, but they do keep you less cold. They can take a dive that would otherwise be freezing and miserable and turn it into something chilly, but totally tolerable.
If you are the type who wants to stay active in local waters throughout the year, the PADI Dry Suit Diver Specialty teaches you proper undergarment layering, dry suit buoyancy control, and recovery drills. It won’t turn a DMV quarry into Bonaire, but it dramatically expands your diving opportunities when neoprene simply won’t cut it.
Your Winter. Your Schedule.
Training at Dive With Frank remains focused on small groups, personal attention, and flexible scheduling tailored to you. Most courses are arranged by request, so you never have to wait for a specific date on a calendar to get started.
Whether you want your Nitrox card before a tropical trip, want to learn life-saving DAN skills, or want to introduce a friend to diving in a heated pool, we can build a training plan that fits your life.

The water outside might be cooling down, but your diving does not have to.
