Dive Deeper Into Your Degree: How PADI Certifications May Double as College Credit
With a whole new cadre of Open Water Divers finishing up over the course of this summer, I wanted to remind everybody that your PADI courses are eligible for college transfer credits. The American Council on Education (ACE) evaluates certain PADI scuba courses according to college-level criteria and recommends credit hours that you can transfer directly to your university transcript.
Whether you need to check off a general elective, fulfill a physical education requirement, or simply want to squeeze extra value out of the training you’ve already completed, your logbook is sitting on real academic currency. These credits typically function exactly like standard transfer credits, meaning most institutions accept them without demanding extra tuition fees.
Here is what you need to know about the current credit recommendations for the core courses you’ve been grinding through (Current as of July 2026):

*CRITICAL NOTE ON SPECIALTIES: To actually claim the 4 recommended semester hours for Dry Suit, Night, Navigator, or Wreck Diver, ACE requires you to successfully complete ALL FIVE qualifying specialty courses (Sidemount, Dry Suit, Night, Underwater Navigator, and Wreck Diver) to earn the total aggregate lower-division diving lab credit. (Fun fact—DWF teaches all of them!)
More classes than the above may be eligible. I just limited this table to the exact tracks I actively teach on our schedule. You can audit historical or technical classes by reviewing the active directory listings within the ACE National Guide.
Colleges and universities won’t accept your raw certification cards or wall diplomas as proof of completion. To officially secure your credits, you need to submit a formal request so an official academic record can be dispatched directly to your institution’s registrar via Credly. Once your certifications are verified, PADI uploads your data to Credly, and you’ll receive an email invitation to claim your digital badges and dispatch your official transcripts to your school’s registrar at no charge.
